Tracking call quality from local search ads
Separate call clicks, received calls, duration conversions and accepted enquiries when assessing local search ads.
Assess calls from local search ads by whether the team answered and whether callers needed a service the business could provide. A call click, a connected call or a long conversation is not, by itself, a qualified lead.
Use call reporting data to review reported calls and duration, then compare those signals with staff-recorded outcomes. This separates call handling from business usefulness; neither a call count nor duration confirms an accepted enquiry.
Separate clicks, calls and outcomes
With call reporting enabled, Google Ads supplies call reporting data for analysis. Phone call conversion tracking is a related feature; check account settings to see how calls are counted as conversions, and keep that total distinct from accepted enquiries.
A shorter call can still appear as a phone call, and duration records time rather than suitability. A click on a number on a mobile website is different: it tracks the click, not the resulting call.
| Measure | What it shows | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Call click | Someone used an ad’s call route | That a call connected |
| Received call and duration | A call connected and lasted a recorded time | That the request was eligible or booked |
| Accepted enquiry | The team confirmed a relevant, serviceable request | That work was completed |
| Completed job | Work was delivered | That the ad alone caused the sale |
The last two measures require business records. Define an accepted enquiry before reviewing results: the requested service is offered, the job address is in area and the team can follow up. Record reasons for rejection, such as wrong service, outside area, duplicate request or no appointment available.
Have the person handling each answered call record whether it meets those criteria, and note a rejection reason when it does not. Keep missed calls separate from rejected enquiries: a missed call has no assessed service outcome.
Check where calls go
Confirm the number a caller will reach and when staff can answer it. Call assets can show a number alongside your ads, so check the number, intended destination and staffed coverage for each relevant location.
Where a call-tracking setup uses dynamic number insertion by traffic source and provides attribution to specific campaigns and keywords, use that information to isolate local search ad calls. Treat it as separate from Google Ads call reporting unless your account’s reported data shows that attribution.
How calls are tracked depends on the call reporting settings in the account. Confirm which number callers see and how the resulting call data is captured before relying on it.
Compare reported calls with accepted enquiries
Review reported calls and conversions alongside accepted enquiries, allowing time for staff to assess and record outcomes. Call reporting data and conversion data are reported separately, so date-based totals may not align exactly.
Where attribution is available, compare local search ad calls with accepted-enquiry records for the same source and review period. You can calculate an accepted-enquiry rate by dividing accepted enquiries by attributed reported calls; where call tracking reports missed calls, keep them separate as an answer-handling signal.
Use duration to flag calls for review, not as an automatic pass mark: neither a short nor long call establishes eligibility or a booking. If call conversions rise without a similar rise in accepted enquiries, inspect call notes, the service message and staffing; these are possible causes to check, not conclusions that call counts can establish.
Use accepted-enquiry records alongside ad reporting to judge whether the campaign produces useful demand. If the call data does not attribute calls to a local search ad, compare totals only rather than assigning a specific business outcome to an individual ad call.
Key Performance Indicators for Call Quality Tracking
- Call conversion rate
- Percentage of calls tracked as conversions in Google Ads
- Duration threshold for review
- Use as a flag for manual review, not automatic qualification
- Missed call rate
- Percentage of calls not answered; separate from rejected enquiries
