Part of Paid search bidding and budget controls

Comparing manual control with automated bidding goals

Compare manual CPC and automated Google Ads Search bidding by bid control, platform goal and the quality of available outcome data.

Choose a Google Ads Search bidding approach by deciding which outcome it should pursue and which controls the team needs. Manual CPC lets an advertiser set and maintain keyword or ad-group bids. Automated strategies set bids toward clicks, visibility, recorded conversions or recorded value. The right comparison uses the campaign’s actual goal and later business outcomes, not the strategy name alone.

Every approach still needs a budget and a way to assess whether the traffic served the business.

Match the goal to the evidence

A click strategy can answer a temporary traffic question when later outcomes are not yet measured reliably. Define what would make those visits useful before treating click growth as success.

If dependable purchases or accepted enquiries are recorded, conversion bidding can pursue an outcome closer to the business goal.

Value bidding needs differentiated, credible values. Assigning the same arbitrary amount to every lead gives it no information about which leads are worth more.

Inspect the conversion actions used by the campaign. A form submission may include duplicates or requests the business cannot serve. Compare recorded actions with later acceptance or sales records. If those outcomes arrive slowly, allow for that delay before reviewing a strategy change. This checks the evidence for choosing bidding, not a conversion-tracking setup procedure.

Google Ads Help documents changes to how Smart Bidding strategies are organised for Search campaigns, and changes to target-based bid strategies. Check the current Google Ads Help documentation, and the campaign’s own target and actual results, rather than relying on a strategy’s name.

Key Considerations for Bidding Strategy Selection

  • Reliable conversion tracking required forConversion bidding and value-based strategies
  • Arbitrary values assigned to all leads result inNo meaningful differentiation between high- and low-value leads
  • Delays in sales or enquiry acceptance requireAllowance for lag before evaluating strategy performance

Record the choice

Record the chosen strategy, the outcome it seeks, the conversion actions or traffic measure used to assess it, the budget and who maintains the settings.

Review platform results beside accepted enquiries or sales. If the conversion definition, budget and bid strategy changed together, the result cannot be attributed confidently to the bidding choice alone.
